Helping Matt find his way into work

Guided to success: How Proper Job’s support helped Matt land a job.

Matt started working with his Proper Job Opportunity Coach (OC) in April 2024. The majority of the meetings have been online using Teams. This is because Matt lives rurally and is isolated but is fairly computer literate. During his time working with his OC, Matt had always been extremely proactive applying for jobs all over Cornwall. This led to many conversations with his OC about why he is applying to so many vacancies, so quickly and in a scattered manner. Matts OC gradually helped him to understand that when looking for a job it’s better to spend time to find out where the job is and consider if you are able to get there and back. If the travelling isn’t a problem, then read the job description carefully and decide if you have the skills set to achieve this role – if so, then apply for it. However in numerous meetings that followed Matt would continue to look at numerous jobs and was quite insistent that he wanted to apply for them all. Matts OC, however, could see that these vacancies were not a good match for him.

In November Matts OC arranged to meet with Matt and his father to formalise a plan stating that in future Matt should only apply for jobs if he has spoken to his OC first. His OC encouraged him, whilst looking for work, to consider voluntary work and organised a shift with Miners Court Care Home. His OC helped him with his DBS certificate application and startup paperwork. Matt is due to start 14 January 2025.

Meanwhile with his OC’s support Matt applied for a paid job at Truro Cathedral as an Event Support Worker. His OC had spent a lot of time with him preparing him for the interview and suggested that he complete an online safeguarding course and also research Equality and Diversity. Matt was able to demonstrate this learning at his interview. Matt was successful and was offered the job! Matts OC continued to support him with the signup paperwork including helping him complete another online Safeguarding course required by the Cathedral.

Matt also likes to bake and had a micro self-employed business baking cakes and biscuits and selling them at the bottom of his garden to walkers that pass on the coastal footpath. Matts OC encouraged him to record all of his expenditure and income because he would need to declare this at the end of the financial year. Also, to ensure that he was making a profit and wasn’t out of pocket producing all of the cakes and biscuits that he sells.

Matts OC will continue to support him for the foreseeable future but has phased support to arm's length as and when needed.
